Creation of L'Institut Français du Cheval et de l'Équitation (IFCE)

(French Institute for the Horse and Equitation)

Bringing an update on information -

The Government announced in January 2010 that the future French Institute for the Horse and Equitation will officially be situated in Saumur.  The department of Maine et Loire (49) was chosen over other departments and has two important bodies in the Ecole National d’Equitation (ENE) and the Haras National at Le Lion d’Angers.

The ENE represents the highest level of traditional French equestrianism, notably due to its écuyers of the prestigious Cadre Noir, whose excellent displays are known throughout the world.

Le Lion d’Angers has as well as its famous national stud, a racecourse and arenas at the Parc de l’Isle-Briand and will be developing more equestrian events around the exciting competition of the Mondial du Lion.

The institute, which aims to be the sole operator of the state for the horse industry, arose from the merger of the public institution The National Stud and the National School of Riding.

Ministers responsible for agriculture and Sports have been jointly appointed directors of this institution:

  • as Director General: Philip GUENIN, chief engineer of bridges, water and forests;
  • as deputy director of training and promotion of riding high: Robert d'Artois, Chief Inspector of Youth and Sports;
  • as a squire in Chief: Colonel Jean-Michel Faure.
The ENE will become the centre of equestrian Industry with many productive projects being implemented.
