Its important therefore to find out what you can and cannot do when renovating. Do you know, for example, that in order to offset your work against any future capital gains tax, you can only produce invoices from registered French artisans. Or for buildings such as field shelters, you must ask planning permission the minute they are over 19m². Its important to know such things in advance and not pay a hefty penalty because of ignorance at a later date.
How do you know where to look to find professional builders and artisans then? How can you trust that what they say is what they do? A good starting point is to always ask for testimonials and then follow them up. If possible go and see the work the company have done on another project. A good reliable company will be proud of its work and not be offended. See for yourself and speak to previous clients. Peace of mind is worth taking that little bit of trouble over. Good workmanship will stand the test of reference and the test of time. Ask to see the companies French registration number as you will have comeback only if they are registered in France. Cowboys may be cheap but cheerful is no fun when you live on a building site and the workmen have gone walkabout with your up front payment!
